Learn More About Abortion

Facing an unexpected pregnancy can feel overwhelming, and it’s important to learn all the facts before making any decisions. Abortion is a procedure with side effects and risks, so being informed is essential to protecting your health and making educated decisions.

At Choices Pregnancy Center, we do not perform or refer for abortions. However, we offer accurate, evidence-based information in a caring and respectful environment.

Understanding Abortion Procedures

Abortion ends a pregnancy through different methods, with how far along you are being a key factor in determining the next steps. The two main types are medical abortion and surgical abortion, each carrying its own risks and side effects.

Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)

This method involves two drugs taken to end an early pregnancy. It is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.

The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the pregnancy to continue. The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract, inducing cramping and bleeding as the body expels the pregnancy.

In addition to cramping and bleeding, side effects may include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Chills or fever
  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach

Additionally, certain risks are associated with abortion drugs, including:

  • Digestive symptoms
  • Fever
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (potentially requiring surgical treatment)
  • Infection

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion involves medical instruments, suction, and drugs to end a pregnancy.

After the procedure, some cramping and spotting are common. However, surgical abortion also carries potential risks such as:

  • Perforation of the uterus (if a surgical tool pokes a hole)
  • Injury to the cervix
  • Scar tissue formation in the uterus (which may impact fertility or cause painful periods)
  • Infection
